WORLD-CLASS CARE FOR WANGARATTA PATIENTS
A re-elected Andrews Labor Government will make sure more world-leading specialists in Wangaratta can treat more patients, and fund the major projects Wangaratta Hospital needs to deliver the very best care.
Wangaratta patients deserve the best care no matter where they live, but under the former Liberal and National Government, regional and rural patients were too often forced to hit the road and travel to Melbourne for treatment and appointments they couldn’t avoid – or pay big out-of-pocket costs for private appointments they couldn’t afford.
We’ve reversed the damage to Wangaratta of their $1 billion cuts to health. The latest performance data shows that 88.9 per cent of ambulance patients were transferred to emergency department care within 40 minutes – up from 86.7 per cent for the same period 12 months prior.
The Andrews Labor Government has already invested $22.1 million to build world-class facilities for Northeast Health Wangaratta, but now we’re going further. A re-elected Labor Government will invest a further $10 million towards the ongoing redevelopment Wangaratta Hospital needs so local doctors and nurses can deliver the very best care.
Wangaratta patients shouldn’t be spending hours away from loved ones to access specialist care. A re-elected Labor Government will make sure locals can access 9,700 more appointments to see specialists for health issues such as chronic pain, allergies or heart conditions over the next four years.
We will also establish a registry for GPs to access, with information about individual hospital wait lists, so that country patients are seen faster – and closer to home.
The Liberals and Nationals are already giving up on Wangaratta patients, telling them they will need to travel long distances because they’ll no longer be able to get their specialist care close to home. Only Labor will make sure Wangaratta patients get world-class care.
Our landmark boost to rural and regional specialist medical services will mean 500,000 extra specialist appointments in regional and rural Victoria over four years – that’s 75,000 extra appointments for heart conditions, 30,000 appointments for arthritis, 50,000 appointments for chronic pain and 40,000 additional appointments for patients suffering from cancer.
The Liberals and Nationals’ cuts to health meant promised beds never opened and elective surgery waiting lists spiraled out of control. We’ve fixed their mess – and elective surgery waiting lists have been at record lows three years in a row – but there’s more to do, and only Labor will get it done.
