A re-elected Andrews Labor Government will help restore Her Majesty’s Theatre in Ballarat to her former glory, contributing to major upgrades and urgent repairs.

Her Majesty’s Theatre opened in 1875 and is not only a beloved icon of Ballarat, it’s one of the oldest theatres in Australia, representing the opulence of the 19th century goldfields era.

Heritage sites are a major attraction for rural and regional Victoria, with 1.9 million people visiting state-listed heritage sites every year, with more than half international visitors.

As home to local musicals, dance recitals and school concerts, Her Majesty’s Theatre is a Ballarat icon – but after 143 years, urgent repairs are needed.

Labor will invest $10 million towards a $22.3 million upgrade, which includes the restoration of all walls, ceilings and floors, the installation of lifts at the back and front-of-house, automation of the orchestra pit, better dressing rooms and the extension and improvement of foyer spaces.

A Ballarat contractor was recently appointed to begin the emergency conservation and structural repair works to the 143-year-old landmark. This work includes reinforcing and remediating the roof’s structural trusses, demolition and reconstruction of the stage, internal guttering, drainage and damp remediation works and plaster repair works.

The Ballarat City Council has committed $5.3 million to the project and Heritage Victoria has committed $2 million. Labor is calling on the Federal Government to provide $5 million to allow this vital project to be completed. If this funding is provided, we would expect that the theatre will be repaired, restored and once again open for business by 2020.

This builds on the $30 million investment the Andrews Labor Government made in the Victorian Budget 2016/17 to restore heritage buildings, the largest financial boost from a state government into Victoria’s heritage sites.

The funding was used for conservation works and for community heritage grants for buildings across Victoria.

Only Labor will protect our state’s most significant buildings for the future and bring this iconic theatre back to life.
