PROTECTING MELBOURNE’S GREEN WEDGES FROM SKYSCRAPER GUY
A re-elected Andrews Labor Government will permanently tighten controls to better protect Melbourne’s green wedges against over development, with the protections enshrined in legislation.
Melbourne’s twelve green wedges cover the areas just outside Melbourne’s Urban Growth Boundary and provide an essential break between the intensive urban development along the growth corridors.
Each green wedge varies substantially in the mix of land uses, from farming and public open space to vegetation and conservation habitat, but all of it needs to be protected.
We know that under the Liberals, the green wedges will be under attack from developers looking to make a quick buck from Liberal Leader Matthew Guy. The Liberals have already promised to fast track 290,000 new homes in our outer suburbs.
Only Labor will protect the green wedges - once they’re gone, they’re gone forever, not just for us and our families but also for the animals that call them home.
Labor will ensure that planning rules are rewritten through a public process to clearly define permitted land uses and protect the green wedges. The new rules will protect the environment, landscape, agriculture, and rural industry of each area, and put a cap on the size of developments.
Labor will also introduce a new strategic agricultural land overlay and permanently protect these areas through legislation. This means that highly productive areas in places such as Werribee South, Bacchus Marsh and Koo Wee Rup will get stronger protection, and the “right to farm” in these areas incorporated in the planning scheme.
In addition to protecting prime agricultural land, a re-elected Labor Government will also undertake a comprehensive review of outer-suburban and peri-urban land to legislate areas for permanent protection for conservation and open space.
Quote attributable to Minister for Planning Richard Wynne
“Make no mistake – a Liberal Government led by the developer’s mate Matthew Guy will put Melbourne’s unique green wedges at risk and once it’s gone, it’s gone forever.
“Only Labor will stop Melbourne’s green wedges from inappropriate development and protect our prime agricultural land in the outer suburbs.”
Quote attributable to Minister for Suburban Development Lily D’Ambrosio
“Matthew Guy has already promised to let rip when it comes to skyscrapers across Melbourne and is planning to shove a million extra people into the suburbs – protecting our green wedges is more important than ever and only Labor will get it done.”
