Former Premier and Ballarat favourite son Steve Bracks will work with the community to make sure the new Ballarat Base Hospital is everything locals want it to be, under a re-elected Andrews Labor Government.

There’s nothing quite as important to a community as its hospital, and thanks to the Andrews Labor Government, Ballarat will soon be home to one of the very best in regional Australia.

We said we’d fund a complete redevelopment of the Ballarat Base Hospital, and we have. The $461.6 million rebuild will mean a new emergency department, a modern acute mental health facility, an ICU, a women’s and children’s hub, an expanded critical care ‘hot floor’ and at least 100 additional inpatient beds.

But as this project gets underway, we want to make sure locals’ voices are at the heart of the project. It’s why under Labor, Ballarat locals will help shape the redevelopment, so that it best meets their needs. Construction of the Ballarat Base Hospital is expected to be complete by 2026.

Steve Bracks will chair a newly-formed Community Consultation Committee, which will hold public forums and work with locals on the best design for the hospital, including plans for open space and public areas.

Mr Bracks has the runs on the board when it comes to building our state’s biggest and best world-class hospitals. He was Premier when Labor rebuilt the Austin Hospital, the Women’s Hospital and the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Labor will hire 1,100 more nurses and midwives, fund 500,000 more specialist medical appointments for patients in regional Victoria, build or upgrade 10 community hospitals and invest in a $100 million boost to the Regional Health Infrastructure Fund.

The Liberals cut a billion dollars from health when they were last in government, and they’ll do it again if they get the chance. People died because they went to war with paramedics and left our ambulance system in crisis. Victorian patients can’t afford a return to the Liberals.

Only Labor will deliver the healthcare that Ballarat families can count on. We’ve ended the ambulance crisis the Liberals left behind and now we’re going further, with a $109 million package to hire 90 more paramedics, build more stations and put more vehicles on the road.
