NORTH EAST LINK STARTS ON MONDAY

North East Link – the missing link in Victoria’s road network – will be put out to market on Monday if Labor is reelected this weekend.

Right now, local streets in the north eastern suburbs are clogged with thousands of trucks and cars. They’re forced to use local streets to get around Melbourne because – 30 years after construction started – Melbourne’s ring road remains incomplete.

North East Link is the only way to take these 15,000 trucks off local roads like Greensborough Road, Fitzsimons Lane, Rosanna Road and Manningham Road. It’s Victoria’s most needed priority project, it will create 10,000 jobs and only Labor will get it done.

A re-elected Andrews Labor Government will fully fund North East Link – providing $15.8 billion to get the project done, with procurement to start immediately.

North East Link has been talked about for more than 50 years and only Labor will deliver it. By contrast, Matthew Guy and the Liberals’ plan to redesign the project will delay North East Link indefinitely.

Labor has a track record of getting major infrastructure projects done, the Liberals can't be trusted to build them at all.

North East Link will begin on the Eastern Freeway at Springvale Road where the capacity of the Eastern will be doubled with new lanes to eliminate some of eastern Melbourne’s worst bottlenecks.

The freeway will connect to a new six lane, 5.3 kilometre tunnel at Bulleen with local connections at Manningham Road and Lower Plenty Road before seamlessly connecting to the M80 Ring Road at Greensborough.

Labor has already invested $210 million to fast-track detailed planning and design, now we’ll fully fund construction and get work started as soon as possible.

The Liberals have opposed this project every step of the way, from threatening to cancel it, to spruiking alternative routes and now promising to delay it by years. Under Labor, construction will start in 2020 and North East Link will open in 2027.
