DITCHING THE DREADED DOUBLE DROP OFF: A KINDER AT EVERY NEW PRIMARY SCHOOL

A re-elected Andrews Labor Government will make sure every new Victorian primary school comes complete with a kindergarten, making it easier on parents and building for a growing state.

Kindergarten gets kids off to the best start in life and readies them for a long and rewarding education. That’s why Labor has already said we will make sure every Victorian child starts kinder a year early – and we’ll help families struggling with costs of living to cover the bills.

Only Labor will invest almost $5 billion over the next decade to deliver a full 15 hours of three-year-old kinder, making sure about a quarter of Victorian families pay nothing at all. We’ll cover 65 per cent of the costs for families on higher incomes.

Kindergarten is the foundation of a great education, teaching kids communication skills, responsibility, and helping them make new friends – so there’s more to do to ensure all Victorian children reap the benefits, and now we’re going further.

A re-elected Labor Government will make sure all eight primary schools set to open in 2021 and all six opening in 2022 will have a kindergarten on its grounds or right next door. Labor will also add kindergartens to new schools under construction and slated for completion in 2019 or 2020 where possible.

This will mean siblings stay close to each other and make school drop-off that little bit easier.

Under Labor, there will be kindergartens at or next to new primary schools at Rockbank, Docklands, Eynesbury, Truganina, Edgars Creek, Wollahra, Greenvale North-West and Merrifield West in 2021. In 2022, kindergartens will be built at Clyde North, Bridge Road and Grasslands Melton, Gisborne South, Wollert East and Kalkallo.

A re-elected Labor Government will get on and complete Victoria’s biggest ever early education build, with almost 1,000 new and upgraded kinders across the state. In order to kickstart work straight away,  Labor will begin working with councils, communities and the Municipal Association of Victoria about the best way to deliver the new kinders.

Only Labor will give kids the best start in life for a great education. The Victorian Liberals hit families hard and cut a billion dollars from education when they were last in office, and now, they’re cheering from the sidelines while Scott Morrison pushes ahead with a $120 million cut to kinder funding in Victoria.

Quotes attributable to Premier Daniel Andrews

“Kindergarten is where a great education begins. We’ll make sure every new primary school in Victoria features a kindergarten, so kids get the best start in life.”

“This makes sense. We’ve already said we’ll make sure all Victorian kids get an extra year of kinder – and now we’re taking action so that the school drop-off is just that little bit easier for parents.”

Quote attributable to Minister for Early Childhood Education Jenny Mikakos

“Investing in early childhood education is the smartest investment we can make to give children the best start in life. But the Liberals only know how to cut education, shortchanging children and raising fees for working families.”
