Families in our fastest growing communities will get the new schools they deserve with a re-elected Andrews Labor Government to open 100 new schools across the state over the next eight years.

Victoria is growing and we need to plan ahead to make sure that every child has access to a great local school.

This $850 million investment will mean that within the next term of a re-elected Labor Government 45 new  schools will open, with planning for the next 55 to get underway. This will make sure that families in every community can have confidence they have a great local school they can rely on.

This investment provides funding to complete a further 24 schools within the next four years - on top of the 21 schools that are already being delivered by the Andrews Labor Government.

This is in contrast to the cuts and closures under former Liberal Governments. Their disgraceful decision to close more than 300 schools and slash funding is still felt in communities and our education system to this day.

Similarly, communities suffered under the most recent Liberal Government with chronic underinvestment in new schools across the state. It can take more than two years to undertake planning, buy new land, and build a new school. This complete lack of investment by the Liberals meant that in 2016 not a single school opened across Victoria.

Labor is making this record investment to build new schools, but we can never let the Liberal Party’s cuts and closures happen again.

Labor’s first term has seen more than $3.8 billion invested in upgrading and building new schools across the state. The first tranche of 45 new schools opening between 2019 and 2022 include:

  • 7 schools in Casey

  • 7 schools in Wyndham

  • 6 schools in Hume

  • 5 schools in Melton

  • 3 schools in Whittlesea

  • 2 schools in Cardinia

  • 2 schools in Port Phillip

  • 2 schools in Greater Geelong, and

  • 11 schools across Ballarat, Bass Coast, Darebin, Glen Eira, Greater Dandenong, Macedon Ranges, Maribyrnong, Melbourne, Mitchell, Stonnington and Yarra

This construction package will create around 2500 construction jobs, and approximately 1,700 teaching and support staff roles over the next four years.

Quotes attributable to Premier Daniel Andrews

“In just four short years, we’ve come a long way, building and fixing schools in every corner of the state. But when it comes to making sure that our kids get the education they deserve, there will always be more to do.”

“Labor will always make sure, no matter where you live, every family and every child has a great local school.”

Quotes attributable to Minister for Education James Merlino

“We all remember the dark days of Liberals closing schools and slashing education funding. Given the chance, they will do it all over again.”

“Victorian school enrolments are growing and we need to plan ahead. All the Liberal Party do is talk about moving people to regional Victoria - but we know the best way to handle population growth is to build new schools and invest in the infrastructure people need.”
