Geelong and Ballarat line passengers are set for a more reliable and comfortable journey with a re-elected Andrews Labor Government set to make a massive order of new trains.

Already, the Labor Government’s $848.5 million investment in regional trains has provided a 40 per cent increase in regional rail services, with V/Line now running more than 2,000 services every week.

The Labor Government has also invested $15 million to improve comfort and reliability on the existing standard gauge Classic Fleet trains and work is underway on new trains for the North East Line, ready for when the track upgrade is complete.

But, there is more to do – and only Labor will replace old trains on the Geelong and Ballarat lines with a $340 million investment to build 54 VLocity carriages to make up to 18 new three-car trains for regional Victorians in these growing cities.

Works are currently underway on every regional rail line in our state and as these works are completed, we’ll get on with delivering more modern trains to travel across the entire network.

Labor will place this order in our first year of government with all trains to be delivered by 2021, supporting 500 local jobs in Dandenong and the south east.

As part of this investment, platform work at Southern Cross Station will also be completed as well as funding towards stabling and cleaning facilities to support these new trains.

Victoria’s massive rolling stock industry which includes building trains, trams and regional carriages supports 10,000 jobs.

These trains are in addition to the Labor’s pledge to make fast rail to Geelong and Ballarat a reality through a $150 million investment to complete all the necessary planning. The Ballarat and Geelong Line Upgrade works are also underway which will deliver more frequent and reliable services to our busiest lines.

This is in stark contrast to the Liberals who ripped $120 million out of V/Line and developed a secret plan to cut 100 jobs. Only Labor will invest in the public transport and trains - that regional commuters can rely on.
